UCSB Smithsonian Scholars Program

The UCSB Smithsonian Scholars Program offers unique research experiences for freshman and sophomore students pursuing a STEM degree at Allan Hancock College, Oxnard College, Santa Barbara City College, Ventura College, and UCSB. Smithsonian Scholars have the opportunity to immerse themselves in hands on conservation science and ecological research with Smithsonian, UCSB, CSUCI and Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History scientists. The program takes students to the Channel Islands where they work alongside conservationists and researchers to restore damaged habitats and conserve natural resources. Smithsonian Scholars also fly to the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, VA and Washington D.C. There they join scientists in their labs to explore several important disciplines necessary for effective conservation.

In addition to these hands-on experiences, scholars learn about career opportunities and the educational pathways that lead to those careers. The UCSB Smithsonian Scholars Program is particularly valuable to community college students who have few opportunities to see how scientific research works close up and first hand.
